Optimal trade entry (OTE)
After an impulse breaks structure, the deep 62–79% retracement offers a discounted entry with a tight stop.
Optimal trade entry is a term from ICT's teaching for a classic idea: entering a trend on a deep Fibonacci retracement. It combines a Fibonacci zone with the premium/discount concept and with order blocks or fair value gaps.
Why it works
A healthy impulse that breaks structure is often followed by a retracement. Buying the deeper part of that retracement means buying at a discount: closer to the invalidation point, so the risk is small and the reward to the next high is large.
When the Fibonacci zone overlaps an order block or a fair value gap, several reasons for a reaction line up in the same place.
The rules
Setup
- An impulse that breaks structure (BOS) in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.
- Draw the Fibonacci retracement from the impulse low to the impulse high (for a long).
- OTE zone: from the 62% to the 79% retracement, with 70.5% as the midpoint.
Entry
- Limit buy inside the OTE zone, preferably where it overlaps an order block or fair value gap.
Stop loss
- Below the impulse low (the 100% level).
Exit and management
- First target at the impulse high (0%); extension targets at −27% and −62%.
Filters that improve it
- Only in discount for longs (below 50% of the range) and in premium for shorts.
- If price breaks below the 100% level, the impulse has failed.
Worked example
Illustrative GBP/USD example on 1H: an impulse runs from 1.2600 to 1.2700, breaking the previous high. The OTE zone is 1.2638 (62%) to 1.2621 (79%). A bullish order block sits at 1.2625–1.2632. Limit buy at 1.2630, stop at 1.2595, target at 1.2700 (2R) and the −27% extension at 1.2727.
Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
Common mistakes
- Drawing the Fibonacci on a move that did not break structure.
- Buying the OTE in a higher-timeframe downtrend.
How to practise it
In Candlemind's drawing tools, the Fibonacci retracement can show custom levels. Add 0.62, 0.705 and 0.79, draw it on the impulse and place a limit order inside the zone.
Pre-trade checklist
- Impulse with a break of structure
- Fibonacci from impulse low to high
- Limit entry in the 62–79% zone
- Overlap with an OB or FVG
- Stop below 100%, target 0% and extensions
Frequently asked questions
What are the OTE Fibonacci levels?
The 62%, 70.5% and 79% retracements of the impulse. The zone between 62% and 79% is the optimal trade entry.
Is OTE different from a normal Fibonacci pullback?
It is a specific, deeper zone than the classic 38.2–61.8%, combined with market structure and order blocks.
