Paper trading: practice without real money

Practice is not about trading a lot: it is about trading with intent and measuring the results. This method turns every paper trading session into real training.

The deliberate practice loop

  • Define a rule before you look at the chart (for example: only buy in the direction of the 4-hour trend).
  • Decide with limited information: no peeking at the future and a fixed number of candles.
  • Execute with fixed risk: the same percentage on every trade.
  • Grade the decision, not the result.
  • Repeat until the mistake disappears from your statistics.

What to measure

Three numbers summarise your progress: win rate, average reward-to-risk, and expectancy per trade in risk multiples (R). A positive, stable expectancy over 50–100 trades is the signal that you are ready for the next step.

Paper trading that feels real

Practice loses value when it has no consequences. A paper account with a balance, streaks, weekly leagues and risk rules that penalise over-leverage creates enough pressure to build habits.
