London breakout strategy

The quiet Asian session builds a tight range. When London opens, liquidity floods in and price usually breaks out of it.

For major forex pairs like EUR/USD and GBP/USD the Asian session is usually quiet. London is the largest forex centre in the world, so its open brings a burst of volume. The London breakout trades the escape from the night's range.

Why it works

Stops and pending orders accumulate just above and below the Asian range. At the London open those orders are triggered and fuel a directional move.

Because the range is usually small, the stop is close and the potential move is large relative to it.

The rules

Setup

  • Mark the high and low of the Asian session (roughly 00:00–07:00 UTC).
  • The range should be narrow: smaller than about half of the pair's daily ATR.

Entry

  • From 07:00 UTC, buy on a 15-minute close above the range high or sell on a close below the range low.
  • Alternative: wait for the first break, then a retest of the range edge.

Stop loss

  • Inside the range: at the middle, or at the opposite side for wider ranges.

Exit and management

  • Target at 1.5–2× the range height, or the previous day's high or low.
  • Close by the New York lunch if the target has not been hit.

Filters that improve it

  • If the first break sweeps the range and closes back inside, do not trade the breakout: that is a fake break (see Turtle Soup and the liquidity sweep strategy).
  • Trade in the direction of the 4H trend when possible.

Worked example

Illustrative GBP/USD example: the Asian range is 1.2700–1.2725 (25 pips). At 07:30 UTC a 15m candle closes at 1.2731. Entry at 1.2731, stop at the middle of the range, 1.2712 (19 pips), target at 1.2775 (range × 1.75, previous day high nearby).

Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.

Common mistakes

  • Trading wide Asian ranges, where the stop becomes too large.
  • Entering on the wick that sweeps the range instead of waiting for a close.
  • Ignoring the economic calendar: UK data at 07:00 UTC can whip both sides.

How to practise it

In Candlemind, turn on the day map (it draws the Asian range automatically) and read 15m candles from 07:00 UTC. Trade only clean closes outside the range and note how many breaks fail.

Pre-trade checklist

  1. Asian range marked (00:00–07:00 UTC)
  2. Range narrow (< ~½ daily ATR)
  3. 15m close beyond the range after 07:00 UTC
  4. Not a sweep that closed back inside
  5. Stop in the range, target 1.5–2× range

Frequently asked questions

What time is the London breakout?

The London session opens at 08:00 UK time, which is 07:00 UTC in summer and 08:00 UTC in winter. Most traders watch the first two hours.

Which pairs work best?

Pairs that include the pound or the euro, such as GBP/USD, EUR/USD and EUR/GBP, because their liquidity peaks during London.
