Liquidity sweep + CHoCH reversal
Wait for price to take out obvious stops, then for a break of structure the other way, and enter on the pullback into the imbalance.
This is the most common reversal model taught in smart money concepts. It combines three ideas from the Candlemind concept library: liquidity sweeps, change of character (CHoCH) and fair value gaps (FVG).
Why it works
Equal highs, equal lows and the previous day's extremes hold clusters of stops. When price runs them and reverses, the move against them is fuelled by the trapped traders.
A CHoCH, the first break of structure against the previous direction, confirms that the sweep was a reversal and not a breakout. The fair value gap left by the displacement offers a precise entry.
The rules
Setup
- Identify a clear liquidity pool: equal lows, the previous day's low or the Asian low (for a long).
- Price sweeps it: a wick below the level that closes back above it.
Entry
- Wait for a CHoCH: a candle closes above the last lower high of the move down.
- Enter on the pullback into the fair value gap (or the order block) created by the move that caused the CHoCH.
Stop loss
- Below the low of the sweep.
Exit and management
- First target at the nearest opposite liquidity (equal highs, previous day's high).
- Move the stop to break-even after the first target.
Filters that improve it
- Best during the London and New York killzones.
- Stronger when the reversal goes in the direction of the 4H trend.
Worked example
Illustrative EUR/USD example on 15m: equal lows at 1.0840. During London price wicks to 1.0832 and closes at 1.0843. A rally closes above the last lower high at 1.0856 (CHoCH), leaving a fair value gap between 1.0846 and 1.0851. A limit buy at 1.0849, stop at 1.0829, target at the equal highs at 1.0890 (about 2R).
Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
Common mistakes
- Entering on the sweep itself, before any confirmation.
- Using a CHoCH on the 1-minute chart against a strong 4H trend.
- Chasing the move when price does not come back into the gap: no fill, no trade.
How to practise it
Candlemind's Market Lens draws liquidity, sweeps, CHoCH and FVGs on every trade replay. Before entering, check that all three appear in order; after a loss, the Lens shows which one was missing.
Pre-trade checklist
- Obvious liquidity identified
- Sweep: wick through and close back
- CHoCH confirmed
- Entry in the FVG / order block
- Stop beyond the sweep, target at opposite liquidity
Frequently asked questions
What is a liquidity sweep in trading?
A quick move beyond an obvious level, where stops sit, that reverses back. The stops provide the liquidity for the move the other way.
Do I need smart money concepts to use this?
No. The same behaviour is described by classic traders as a failed breakout or stop run (see Turtle Soup).
