ADX trend strength strategy
ADX tells you whether there is a trend worth trading. Above 25 with +DI on top, buy pullbacks; below 20, stay out.
Try ADX trend strength strategy on a real day
A real market day with the date hidden. Run the checklist on the chart, then buy, sell or stay out: the real candles answer.
Check every point of the list before you decide. Stay out if the setup is not there.
The Average Directional Index is another of J. Welles Wilder's 1978 indicators. It does not show direction, only strength: a rising ADX means the market is trending, whichever way. Its two companion lines, +DI and -DI, show which side is in control.
Why it works
Most trend-following losses happen in sideways markets. ADX filters them out: when it is low, the market is ranging and trend setups fail more often.
When ADX is high and rising and +DI is above -DI, buyers dominate. A pullback to a moving average in that context is one of the cleanest continuation trades.
The rules
Setup
- ADX(14) above 25 and rising.
- +DI above -DI for longs (the opposite for shorts).
Entry
- Wait for a pullback to the 20-period EMA.
- Buy when a candle closes back above the EMA.
Stop loss
- Below the pullback low, or 1.5× ATR below the entry.
Exit and management
- Target 2R, or trail under the 20 EMA.
- Exit if ADX turns down from above 40 and price closes below the EMA: the trend is exhausting.
Filters that improve it
- No trend trades when ADX is below 20.
- An ADX above 50 often marks an extended trend: reduce size.
Worked example
Illustrative GBP/USD example on 4H: ADX is 31 and rising, +DI is 28 and -DI 14. Price pulls back to the 20 EMA at 1.2710 and closes at 1.2725. Buy at 1.2725, stop at 1.2690, target 1.2795 (2R).
Illustrative numbers, not a recommendation.
Common mistakes
- Reading a high ADX as a bullish signal: it is high in strong downtrends too.
- Entering after ADX has peaked and started to fall.
How to practise it
In Candlemind keep the EMA 20 on and write ADX in My indicators with the rma() and tr() functions. Before each trade, note the ADX value. After 30 trades, compare your results above 25 and below 20.
Pre-trade checklist
- ADX above 25 and rising
- +DI above -DI (or the opposite for shorts)
- Pullback to the 20 EMA
- Close back above the EMA
- Stop below the pullback low
